What actually survives?

The most extensive witness is the fifth-century Coptic Berlin Codex 8502, but ten pages of the Gospel are missing. Two smaller third-century Greek fragments preserve portions of the same work.

What we know

Less than half survives.

The Coptic manuscript preserves nine pages of the Gospel; ten pages are missing. Two Greek fragments confirm earlier circulation of portions of the text.

What is disputed

Which Mary - and when?

Mary is often identified as Mary Magdalene, but the surviving title simply says Mary. The date and social setting of the work are also debated.

Why it matters

Authority is the conflict.

The surviving ending stages a direct dispute over Mary's revelation: Peter and Andrew challenge it, while Levi defends her and rebukes Peter.
